Ep. 72: Climate Doom & Climate Solutions
This week Adam & Casey are joined by Carla Santos-Skandier of the Next System Project to discuss the recent horrors profiled in NY Magazine as well as a potential thing to do about impending climate collapse beyond curling up in a ball and crying because the oceans are going to turn into hydrogen sulfate (or something like that).
Carla's background is in environmental law, and she is currently a Research Associate at the Next System Project and a 2017 Oil Lab Fellow with the Climate Strategies Accelerator.
In part one, we discuss our feelings (mostly terror) in the wake of David Wallace-Wells' "The Uninhabitable Earth" in NY Magazine. Wallace-Wells details the numerous ways climate change will kill us. Does this kind of writing add to a malaise about climate change? Is the data here accurate, or do such scenarios require this kind of precision? Why doesn't Wallace-Wells talk about capitalism? All that and more!
In part two we discuss the solution that Carla is proposing: buy out the fossil fuel companies' reserves and retire them. It has been referred to in The Nation as "The Policy Weapon that Climate Activists Need." It's certainly a direct approach taking the biggest polluters--as well as the biggest "vested interest" type of obstacles--off the board. But is it feasible? How could the government do this? What would this mean for the millions currently employed in the fossil fuel industry? Check it out!
